What are dental implants?

Dental implants are an incredibly popular way to replace missing teeth and rebuild your smile. They are a highly advanced restorative option, using innovative digital technology for a strong, secure and aesthetic outcome.

We use dental implants of the highest quality, which are proven to have an excellent success rate and long term reliability. The implant creates a fixed new root, effectively mimicking the stable and secure foundation of a natural tooth. Titanium posts are placed into your jawbone to support an aesthetic replacement tooth on top. Over time, the titanium root fuses to the surrounding bone and becomes fully integrated into your jaw as a solid and durable restoration.

What does dental implant treatment involve?

At your initial consultation appointment, we examine your teeth and gums, checking you are suitable for implant treatment. We talk you through how dental implants work and give you the chance to tell us about your smile goals and ask any questions.

We create your treatment plan and discuss this with you, including an estimated cost and timeframe. We take digital images and scans of your teeth, enabling us to carefully plan the most accurate positions for your dental implants. If you need any preparatory treatment, we have a visiting specialist surgeon who can perform bone grafts or sinus lifts.

We place the titanium implant into your jaw, using local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort. It takes around 3-6 months for the implant to heal and fuse to your jawbone, so we fit a temporary tooth to protect your gum during this time.

When your implant has fully healed, we see you in the practice to complete your new smile! We fit your final crown, bridge or denture on top and make sure you are completely happy with the result. Now all you need to do is start showing off your smile!

Frequently asked questions

  • You shouldn’t feel any pain during your dental implant treatment, as we use local anaesthetic during the surgery. Afterwards, you may feel some discomfort, but this does not last long and can be managed by taking painkillers as advised by your dentist.

  • The whole dental implant process takes several months, as the implant needs time to heal and fuse to your bone before fixed permanent teeth can complete your smile. The implant surgery itself is a relatively quick procedure, but healing can take up to six months in some cases. Your new smile will be worth the wait!

  • Dental implants have the potential to last for the rest of your life, providing they are properly looked after. As they are fused into your jawbone, they mimic natural tooth roots exactly. You need to remember to brush and floss twice a day, look after your overall health and visit your dentist for regular check up appointments. The replacement tooth fixed on top of your implant may need to be replaced over time due to wear and tear.

  • You should treat your dental implants just like natural teeth, and include them in your normal oral hygiene routine. As they are made from artificial materials, your implants are invulnerable to decay or cavities, but you will still need to brush and floss to keep the gum surrounding the implant healthy and problem-free.

  • Dental implants usually affect how you talk in a very positive way! You may find it easier to pronounce certain words or speak clearly when you no longer have a missing tooth, and you will certainly speak more confidently with securely supported implants than any other restoration.

  • Yes, teeth implants are very successful at replacing a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. We can insert several strategically placed implants to support a bridge or partial denture, replacing a number of adjacent teeth. Dental implants can also be used to replace a full arch of upper or lower missing teeth, giving you back the confidence of a full smile.

  • PRGF® (Plasma Rich in Growth Factors) technology is based on the activation of the patient’s own platelets for the stimulation and acceleration of tissue healing and regeneration.
