Understanding dental anxiety

Dental anxiety can stem from various factors, including:

Fear of pain: The fear of dental procedures causing pain is a leading cause of dental anxiety. It’s important to remember that modern dentistry offers painless options for treatment.

Past traumatic experiences: A negative experience at the dentist in the past can lead to apprehension about future visits. Our team is here to create a different, positive experience for you.

Fear of the unknown: Not knowing what to expect during a dental appointment can be anxiety-inducing. We’re dedicated to providing clear explanations of procedures to ease your concerns.

Loss of control: Feeling helpless or out of control during dental treatments can contribute to anxiety. We encourage open communication and collaboration in your dental care.

Helping you feel at ease during dental treatment

We’re here to help you feel at ease during your dental treatment. Consider these tips to make your next dental visit stress-free:

Schedule an early appointment: Booking an early morning appointment can help reduce waiting times, giving you less time to dwell on your anxiety.

Bring a friend or family member: Having someone you trust with you can provide comfort and support during your visit.

Talk to us beforehand: Before your appointment, have a conversation with us about your concerns. We can explain the procedure and address any questions or worries you may have.

Use earphones: Listening to your favourite music or an audiobook can distract you from the sounds of the dental equipment and make the experience more enjoyable.

Practice deep breathing: Deep, slow breaths can help relax your body and mind. Try inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling through your mouth during your appointment.

At Hurst Dental & Implant Clinic, we prioritise your comfort and well-being. Our compassionate team is experienced in working with nervous dental patients, and we’ll go the extra mile to ensure your visit is as stress-free as possible.

Sedation

If you have dental anxiety, IV sedation is a safe, effective way to make you feel completely relaxed and much more willing to undergo treatment. Your worries will be eliminated but you remain conscious and able to answer questions, so the dentist can treat you more effectively.

Why choose to have sedation?

  • Makes you feel completely relaxed and anxiety-free
  • Rapid onset of the calming effects
  • Level of sedation can be tailored to suit your needs
  • Can help you forget the treatment process
  • Allows you to communicate with the dentist

What is involved in having sedation?

Your general health will be a carefully assessed, including your blood pressure and oxygen levels.

A very thin needle is inserted into a vein in the back of your hand leaving a soft plastic tube through which the sedative will be gradually delivered. You will be closely monitored throughout the treatment process.

Additional medication will be required to relieve any discomfort as sedation only calms you and does not provide pain relief. However, this will be administered once you are suitably relaxed.
The effects of sedation will take a while to wear off, so you will need someone to take you home and keep an eye on you.
