What does teeth whitening treatment involve?

If you are interested in whitening your teeth, we first see you for a dental examination. We make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and may ask you a few questions to determine the cause of the discolouration. We discuss the treatment with you, including what to expect during and after the procedure.

On the day of your whitening treatment, we welcome you to the practice and make sure you are feeling comfortable in the chair. The procedure is very simple. We apply specialised hydrogen peroxide gel to your teeth, and use the Zoom Whitespeed blue light to activate this and transform the colour of your smile.

You won’t be able to believe how much your teeth have changed in just an hour! We make sure you are happy with your results and talk you through some aftercare advice. Top up trays are included to help you maintain your whiter teeth.

Frequently asked questions

  • No, teeth whitening treatment does not hurt at all. The procedure is non-invasive and we take a gentle and careful approach. You may experience some sensitivity in your teeth, but this is temporary.

  • Teeth whitening is a very safe treatment when it is performed by a qualified dental professional. We are best placed to look after your teeth and gums during treatment, and make sure you are dentally fit before we begin. We also use regulated products. You should avoid teeth whitening kits that can be easily bought online or in beauty salons, as these could cause damage.

  • The amount of time that your teeth will stay white after your treatment depends on you! The starting shade of your teeth and your diet and lifestyle choices can all affect how long your results last. We give you top up trays after your treatment to help you maintain your results.

  • Teeth whitening treatment is not effective on dental restorations such as veneers, crowns, dentures or bridges. You may find that these are a different shade to your natural teeth once you have had whitening treatment, so you may wish to whiten your teeth before they are placed, if possible. Your veneers or crowns can be replaced to match the new colour of your teeth, at additional cost. Please talk to us about your options.
